Edward Robins

Edward Robins, son of Richard & Dorothy Goodman Robins & brother of Col. Obedience Robins, was baptized Aug. 26, 1604, at Long Buckby. Edward Robins, age 33, was transported to Va. Aug. 21, 1635, on the ship Thomas by Mr. Henry Taverner. He married Jane Cornish. He was in Accomack Co VA by May 1, 1637, when he was ordered to pay a debt to Thomas Nuton.

On June 4, 1646, Elizabeth & Rachel Robins, orphans of Edward Robins, were granted 350 a. in Northampton Co for the transportation of seven persons, including Edward Robins and others. Edward Robins died by 1646 in Northampton Co, Va.

    BEARD, RICHARD: (?-1681). IMMIGRATED: in 1650 as a free adult with his wife and two children, probably from Virginia. RESIDED: in South River Hundred, Anne Arundel County. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: probably lived in Virginia from at least 1646 to his migration to Maryland, during which period he married and had two children. MARRIED ca. 1646 Rachel, daughter of Edward Robins (1602- by 1646), a merchant of Accomack County, Virginia. Her sister was Elizabeth who married William Burgess (ca. 1622-1686/87). CHILDREN: SONS: Richard (ca. 1648-1703), ajustice of Anne Arundel County from 1679-ca. 1692, who made the first map of Annapolis and who married Susannah (? -1708); John (?-1678). DAUGHTERS: Rachel (?-after -1724), who married first, Neale Clarke (?-1676), second, John Stimpson (?-by 1692), third, Robert Proctor (?-by 1695); fourth, Richard Kilburne (?-by 1698), and fifth, Thomas Freeborne (?-1713); Rebecca, who married (first name unknown) Nicholson; and Ruth. PRIVATE CAREER. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Protestant, Quaker by 1657. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: boatwright; planter. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower House, Anne Arundel County, 1662, 1663-1664, 1666 (Laws.) STANDS ON PUBLIC/PRIVATE ISSUES: summoned for service on a grand jury of the Provincial Court in 1660, but he refused to swear the required oath; presented a petition with othres in 1674 to obtain relief for Quakers from swearing oaths; his religious beliefs undoubtedly account for his failure to hold offices other than that of burgess.     Richard Beard’s Conversion: 1656/7

    Richard Beard, was in a miraculouse way convinced in ye fore pt of the sumer, by a clap of thunder he being at worke in ye wood, and one neare w/ him in a rainy wether, and at that instant it thundered much as is usuall in ye summertyme in soe much that itt wrought a feare in him, and put him to the risk of his condition, and it did apeare to him to bee, unsafe, hee seeing nothing to trust to, theire being soe many opinions that hee did nott know wch to chuse hee then being in feare not knowing st would become of him in that condition; desired that ye Lord would manifest to him, concerning the way wch was knowne amongst us whether it was the true way of good or not yet it mought be maide knowne to him by thunder, and at that same instant theire came a clap of thunder wch was verry greate, in soe much that it broake a tree very neeare them and strooke him that was with him to ye ground, and himselfe could scarce recover from faleing and a porefull answer came to him at the same Instant, that that which hee had inquired, of was ye true way of god and forthwith he declayred it abroad and was convinced thereby wherein I hope he abides.” -- Letter from Tobt Clarksonne to Elizabeth Harris, “From Severon ye 14th of ye 11th month 16(5)7”. Clarksonne letter documents the first meetings in 1657 as being at Clarksonne’s and Richard Beard’s. Richard Beard is also referred to in “A Testimony Concerning William Coale (London 1682) Original in Friends Historical Library, London. In 1657 Quaker Meetings, held at Richard Beard’s house on South River, were attended by prominent Anne Arundel County people and convincements were made there. William Coale spoke eloquently at some of those Meetings. In 1674, together with Wenlock Christison, another great Quaker, and William Perrie (Berry) and John Homeard (Homewood,) he presented to the General Assembly of Maryland a petition praying relief from the requirement of taking oath.     Joseph Burger (Burges) of Wilts., Engl. and Anne Arundel County, Md. Will of 1672: mother: wife of John Keynes of Marlborough.     On 30 Nov. 1672 Joseph Burgess’ stepfather, John KEYNES of Marlborough, Wiltshire produced a deed to Benjamin LAWRENCE of Marlborough, chandler, for the sale of land in Anne Arundel Co., MD, and a letter of attorney to William BURGES, Thomas TAYLOR, Nathaniel HEATHWICKE, and George PUDDINGTON s0 that KEYNES could enter the land and give possession to LAWRENCE.2 [2.     The father of the Joseph BURGES of the Anne Arundel Co., MD will was Isaac, son of William Burgess (William Burgess will 14 june, 1640, probated 6 Nov. 1641.5, wife Alice, dau. Mary m. Edward Puttman; dau. Martha m. EDWARD HUTCHINS; dau. Eliz son Isacke Burgis, grandchildren Mary and Eliz Burgis dau. of Joseph Burgis, dec., residue to son Daniel who was exec. Very good friends: brother in law William Blisset, THOMAS HUNT, William Barnes overseers. ). Isaac was probably born about 1615. The church records show that Isaac married Anne YORK 13 Aug. 1640. Isaac BURGES was buried on 10 Oct. 1668. His widow as "Mrs. Anne Burges" secondly married John KEYNES on 17 Jan. 1669. Mr. John KEYNES was buried 13 Dec. 1675.

    Will of John KEYNES of Marlborough: 1 Jan. 1674; probated 20 Mar. 1675. Named wife Anne KEYNES and made numerous bequests to children and grandchildren from a prior marriage, and other relatives. Also made bequests to his wife's son Isaack BURGES, his wife's son Daniel BURGES, his wife's daughter PARKE, his wife's son William BURGES,his wife's son Samuell BURGES at 21, his wife's son Jeremy BURGES at 22, his wife's daughter Anne, and his wife's daughter Mary at 18. Also mentioned was his "brother-in-law" Mr. Daniel BURGES.

    The William BURGES baptized in 1626 is believed to be the son of a "WilliamBURGES the younger" who was buried 24 August 1641. This man was apparentlythe father of:   1.
